The Essentials
DANIËLLE KEMPEN's Way
Meet Daniëlle Kempen, stylist and creative director, based in Amsterdam with her recently expanded family of four. Together with her partner, William Los, she embraces new challenges and loves discovering the world alongside their work on set.
With their daughter Billy (4.5 years) and little Edie (4 months), they travelled to Costa Rica for their first trip as a family of four.
“Escaping winter and travelling through the jungle of Costa Rica for a month, that’s what we did as a family. We swapped our snow-covered backyard for the world’s greatest playground: nature."
"Slowing down turned out to be the key to this trip. Taking three hours to hike 500 metres, because along the way there is always something to see, feel, or pick up. Dressed in soft Gray Label sets that were allowed to get dirty, free to move, and still comfortable at the end of the day.”
Morning ritual?
“Early mornings spent treasure hunting (shells and stones), then painting them in the shade in the afternoon when the sun was too high (tip: bring a small watercolour set and brushes when you travel). Discovering the world through your children’s eyes and fully surrendering to it, without expectations for the day.”
"Pipas (small coconuts) and papaya (did you know the seeds help against parasites?). Swinging on a makeshift swing made from a tree trunk. Bare feet and sun on skin."
Transfer?
"Going from A to B in the truck, feeling the breeze and hearing Billy laugh. Climbing onto the car with Billy."
“Billy’s favourite moment: an exciting flight in a small airplane, sitting in the cockpit. Comfort and memories that last, that’s what we brought home with us.”
"Two little explorers dressed in the softest Gray Label essentials: comfortable rompers, airy striped dresses, and gentle basics that move with every step."
“It became an exciting adventure, our first as a family of four. Now that we’re home again, one question keeps coming up: what is it like to travel with two small children? The honest answer: hard work. But also incredibly joyful.”
